What is the environmental impact of forestry?

Carbon Sequestration

Trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they grow. This carbon dioxide (CO2) is stored (or sequestered) in the biomass of the tree. This process helps reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, making trees important for climate regulation.

Each 200-share investment in the forest helps capture an average of 48 tonnes of CO2e annually — that’s more than 10 times the average annual greenhouse emissions of a New Zealand household. What is a carbon forest investment?

A growing forest captures value for the forest owner. This value may be realised the following ways:

  • The forest can be harvested on maturity and sold for timber; or
  • The carbon stored by the forest each year may earn New Zealand Units (NZUs or carbon credits) that can be sold through the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS); or
  • A combination of both of those options.

Currently, the projected returns from the sale of NZUs are greater than the value realised by harvesting and sale of timber. Over time changes in NZU pricing, timber pricing and production costs may mean that harvesting or a combination of the two generates a higher return for your investment.

What is the difference between a carbon forest and a timber forest?

Whether grown for a primary strategy of carbon or timber, Forest Enterprises is a responsible land manager that will expertly manage your forest. A best practice silviculture regime is implemented regardless of the primary investment strategy.

Forest Enterprises maintains a production timber regime and continues to tend (prune and/or thin) our forests that have a primary strategy of growing carbon. This preserves more options for harvesting in the event that investment returns could be maximised with harvest.

Why do we plant pines and not natives for carbon investment?

Pine growth rates mean that they absorb significantly more carbon than indigenous forest/NZ natives in a short period. This maximises the returns available to investors over the term of the investment.

At 10 years old a radiata pine forest has stored over 5 times the carbon of an indigenous forest and at 50 years it is 4 times greater (Climate Change (Forestry) Regulations 2022 default tables of carbon stock).

Planting and establishment costs for pine forests are also significantly lower than the cost of establishing a native forest.
